Agricultural Research Technician
The Amalgamated Sugar Company LLC – Nyssa, Oregon

The Amalgamated Sugar Company LLC is seeking an Agricultural Research Technician reporting to the Manger of Plant Health to establish, grow, harvest and analyze nematology, plant pathology, entomology and other agronomy related trials and research projects. Conduct studies regarding sugar beet cyst nematodes and other nematodes affecting sugar beets including but not limited to setting up, evaluating and analyzing greenhouse and field trials. Supervise the operation and maintenance of the plant pathology laboratory and the greenhouse/insectary at the Nyssa facility in Oregon. Participate with the Sugarbeet Quality Improvement Department (SBQI) team to achieve team objectives.

• Conduct sugar beet cyst nematode and other nematode variety screens in the greenhouse and the field.

• Prepare, quantify and qualify nematodes as inoculum for greenhouse trials.

• Evaluate and analyze all nematode related studies.

• Sample fields, analyze soil samples and identify nematode species (morphologically and molecular).

• Identify research needs and present research ideas.

• Work independently.

• Organize and execute all plant pathology, entomology and agronomy related trials and research projects.

• Perform and oversee experimental design, plot layout, planting and all cultural practices.

• Assist the Manager of Plant Health in collecting, organizing and analyzing relevant data.

• Prepare reports/information for publication.

• Prepare and distribute educational and research results to sugarbeet growers and agricultural staff.

• Supports SBQI researchers regarding statistical questions and helps with data analysis.

• Supervise the day to day operation and maintenance of the plant pathology laboratory at Nyssa, OR.

• Prepare and maintain fungal inoculum.

• Perform basic molecular and microbiological tasks.

• Maintain a safe and productive working environment and assure that all personnel have been properly trained.

• Supervise the day to day operation and maintenance of the greenhouse at Nyssa, OR.

• Maintain the beet leaf hopper insectary by providing continuous supply of feeder plants, increasing hopper population, pest management.

• Perform and oversee other research projects in the greenhouse.

Job Requirements

• Completion of Master’s degree with emphasis in nematology is required;
• Experience in general plant pathology and/or entomology and strong applied agricultural statistics is desired;
• Minimum 1-3 years of work-related experience in field and laboratory research;
• OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Above average written and oral English skills with ability to articulate detailed information in a clear and concise manner.
